Aka GARY’S GARRULOUS GARDENING GUIDE
By Gary Crispell, North Carolina Extension Master GardenerSM volunteer of Durham County
“There’s a song in the air.
There’s a star in the sky.”
The garden’s a disaster.
I just want to cry.
But look to the east.
I can’t believe what I see!
Friends are all coming,
Coming to help me!
Friends are beautiful.
Friends are a gift.
When you are down in the soil,
They’ll give you a lift.
Friends are amazing,
And, begging your pardon,
They are especially welcome
When they help in the garden.
They help mow the lawn
For the very last time,
And if you are lucky,
They’ll spread you some lime.
Leaving the leaves
Is a tedious chore,
But off in the woods
They’re unsightly no more.
If you missed winter fert
In October & November,
You can still put it out
In early December.
There might be light pruning
Left to be done.
Make a game of it-
Just have some fun.
There’ll be no more spraying;
That is done for the year.
Clean out your stuff.
Hang it up ’til next year.
There are tricks of the trade
When you try propagation.
Our own in-house prop team
Can relieve your vexation.
Your work is done here.
Growing season is through.
Time to dig in
To a big pot of stew.
Take a moment to relax.
Go sit by a fire.
Let not the small things
Agitate your ire.
It is the season
Of love and good cheer-
A time to remember
The highs of the year.
My wish for you
In the upcoming year?
May all of your gardens
Be free of deer.
(Well, maybe that’s too much to ask. How about: may your garden bring you cheer and an abundance of zucchini?)
Be grateful, my friends,
For that which you’ve got,
And take time to remember
Those who have not.
Happy Hanukkah!
Merry Christmas!
Joyous and Thoughtful Kwanzaa!
