What Are Extension Master GardenerSM volunteers?
The NC State Extension Master GardenerSM program began in 1979 and has grown to 80 programs across our state’s 101 local NC Cooperative centers. Extension Master GardenerSM volunteers are trained to help connect North Carolinians with the vast horticultural knowledge and research developed at North Carolina A&T University and NC State University. Durham County Cooperative Extension has over 140 volunteers in the Extension Master Gardener program.
Through a variety of outreach programs, the Master Gardener volunteers of Durham County educate and inspire all gardeners (from the curious, to beginners, to even the more experienced) with research-based information, presentations, and demonstrations. They also help maintain the Briggs Avenue Community Garden, the Demonstration Garden at the NC Cooperative Extension office at 721 Foster Street in Durham, and the Cocoa Cinnamon Demonstration Garden across from the extension building.

Program Requirements
- Complete Initial Training, Thursdays from 9 am – 12:30 pm, January – May 2027 at the NC Cooperative Extension at 721 Foster Street in Durham
- Volunteer 40 hours annually
- Continue the journey through ongoing education classes
