Growing tomatoes and okra are Southern traditions. This session will discuss how to grow these two staples of the Southern garden in ground, in raised beds and in containers. We will review planting from seed and seedling, pest and disease treatment and watering and fertilizing. We will also provide information on numerous varieties of both heirlooms and hybrids that can be successfully grown in Durham.

Pollinators-a-Plenty: A Look at Hundreds of Pollinators Aiding Food and Flower Production in North Carolina. Sunday, March 12th, 3-4 pm. Durham County Public Library – South Regional Branch 4505 S Alston Ave. Registration is required. Learning about these amazing creatures will encourage you to plan your garden to help them thrive.

Join the Durham Co. Extension Master Gardeners for a FREE 1-hour talk on all the tips and tricks to growing your best ever crop of tomatoes & okra this summer on Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. at the Durham County Cooperative Extension Office, 721 Foster Street, Durham NC 27701.

Now that the danger of frost is well-past, it’s time to get your tomatoes and okra plants in the ground! You’ll get many ideas on the best tomato varieties to grow (for slicing, for salsa, for sauces, for sandwiches) and the most tender & productive okra varieties.
